The Bible and Money


Comment: - In the Bible, money is usually looked upon favourably, contrary to what many think. Interest on money is even promoted especially in the New Testament. This is in contrast with the article on Lending.


Ecclesiastes 7:12
12 For wisdom [is] a defence, [and] money [is] a defence: but the excellency of knowledge [is, that] wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
Ecclesiastes 10:19
19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all [things].

(Money answers all things)
Matthew 25:27
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and [then] at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
Mark 12:41
41. And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
Luke 19:15
15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
Luke 19:23
23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?
Acts 4:37
37 Having land, sold [it], and brought the money, and laid [it] at the apostles' feet.

(Money is used to make more money for the master)
1 Timothy 6:10
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

(The only place in the Bible where money has a negative connotation.)
Exodus 22:7
7. If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double.
Exodus 22:25
25. If thou lend money to [any of] my people [that is] poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury.
Leviticus 22:11
11 But if the priest buy [any] soul with his money, he shall eat of it, and he that is born in his house: they shall eat of his meat.
Leviticus 25:37
37 Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase.
