Police Say Scattered Body Parts Belong To Same Woman

Scio Township, Mich. - Body parts were discovered several miles apart off Interstate 94 and are believed to belong to the same woman, authorities said.

The first discovery — a pair of severed human feet — was made by a McDonald's employee Thursday morning inside a restaurant garbage bin in this town about 30 miles west of Detroit, said Washtenaw County Sheriff's Lt. Brenda Sutton.

More body parts were found four hours later at a rest stop a mile east of the restaurant, authorities said. Then, Thursday evening, the head of a woman was found at a landfill in Northfield Township, about eight miles northeast of the restaurant.

Ms. Sutton said the body parts appear to be from a white woman, but she declined to specify details, including the possible age of the victim. She said investigators know of no missing person who matches the description of the victim.

Detectives say they believe the remains are those of someone killed not more than two days earlier, and say the parts are of the same body.

"It's like a jigsaw puzzle right now, and we're looking for the rest of the pieces,'' Ms. Sutton said. "Clearly, the intent was for us not to find the body.''

Authorities planned to check other landfills today, Ms. Sutton said.
