Buckingham Palace condemns
new Diana book

LONDON - Buckingham Palace Wednesday condemned a new book about Princess Diana's death one year ago, dismissing as ``pure fantasy'' its claim that Britain's Queen Elizabeth was concerned about retrieving any royal jewels the princess might have had when she died.

``We treat this book with the contempt it deserves,'' a palace spokesman said.

The book, ``The Day Diana Died,'' by American journalist Christopher Andersen, said a British diplomat was sent to the Paris hospital where Diana's body lay after the car crash in the French capital.

The book said the diplomat blurted out to a nurse: ``The queen is worried about the jewelry. We must find the jewelry quickly. The queen wants to know, 'Where are the jewels?'''

Andersen said the book was based on months of interviews with hospital personnel, Buckingham Palace staff and sources in high places.

``The (book's reported) reaction (to Diana's death) by the queen is particularly inaccurate,'' the spokesman said.

Andersen wrote that the queen refused to let Prince Charles wake their sons and tell them that their mother was dead.
