The United States
was a maturing democracy in 1798. Two marks of this maturity were the nation’s
refusal to get involved in the war between France
and England and
the appearance of our coins. With the availability of new, modern coin presses,
the Mint could produce large silver coins with strikes much bolder than
previously possible. This opened the way for new and more impressive designs.
The obverse of the silver dollar changed from the young, vibrant flowing hair
design to a more mature, matronly concept of Miss Liberty. With the help of
noted artist Gilbert Stuart, the Mint was elevating the stature of our face to
the world: our coinage. The reverse was also updated, with a rendering of the
Great Seal for the United States.
The series is a treasure trove to collectors due to the large number of
varieties, but all Draped Bust dollars are in constant demand.
