Celebrating Hip Hop's Move to "Higher Ground"
The "Higher Ground: Hip-Hop Reformed & Reborn" CD Release Party Grand Finale to Gospel Hip Hop MonthLos Angeles - March 17, 2004 - The New Day Multimedia/Image Entertainment compilation "Higher Ground: Hip-Hop Reformed & Reborn" will receive a "grand introduction" to the community on Saturday, March 27, 2004. Marci Kenon, president of New Day and the executive producer, has joined forces with TRUTH entertainment, to produce the release party. This event will celebrate this Gospel Hip Hop compilation which features artists such as Camp 8 (a.k.a. Gospel Gangstaz), C.L. Ryderz, Grits, The Cross Movement, Jah Word, Elle R.O.C. and Tonex protégés - Applejaxx and Gibraan.
The "Higher Ground" CD is the companion to the "Higher Ground: Voices of Contemporary Gospel Music" documentary also produced by Kenon and released by Image Entertainment in February. The documentary explores contemporary gospel music and the way each new wave of sound, from the music of Mahalia Jackson to Gospel Hip Hop, has been scrutinized by the Christian community and how the artists have overcome the critics and grown from the experiences. Those interviewed for this highly acclaimed film include Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin, Dr. Bobby Jones, Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams and Albertina Walker. This documentary has been lauded by the gospel music community and in the larger Christian and secular media such as the Trinity Broadcasting Network and Black Entertainment Television (each of which has aired segments on the documentary).
Since Gospel Hip Hop is the most current wave of gospel music, it seemed fitting that the audio companion to the "Higher Ground" documentary would focus on this music genre. When asked about her feeling on Hip Hop and its influence on today's generation, Kenon said "Hip-Hop music is the most prevalent genre in the world today. It would be a lost to the kingdom for it not to be used as a tool to bring people to Christ and to offer the youth an alternative to the mainstream hip-hop that dominates the airwaves and the young people's brain waves."
TRUTH's founders, Nicole Smith and Carla Yorke, connected with Kenon at the screening of the "Higher Ground" documentary at the Pan African Film & Arts Festival in Los Angeles in February. "When we saw the film and how it really gave a voice to the struggles of today's Holy Hip Hop artists, we were excited. And then we heard the CD and it was off the hook! We realized it needed a grand introduction like the film received." TRUTH has been focused on broadening the reach and influence of Gospel Hip Hop by producing The Underground, a monthly Gospel Hip Hop showcase. TRUTH also declared March Gospel Hip Hop month with the goal of encouraging the public to learn more about this music genre that, as they describe, "has the ability to open the hearts of the hip hop generation to God."
The "Higher Ground" CD Release Party will be the finale to Gospel Hip Hop month and all are invited to attend. This celebration is a LIVE show and will feature hot Gospel Hip Hop performances, a DJ spinning urban gospel music and TRUTH's unique gospel freestyle session. Performers will include Camp 8, C.L. Ryderz and The Dynamic Twins. The event will take place on the campus of the University of Southern California at 8 pm. Additional details are below.
