NEW YORK, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- On Thursday April 6th, the annual 'Keepers of the Dream Awards' honor The Godfather of Soul, music legend -- James Brown with the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Award. This event is hosted by Reverend Al Sharpton and the National Action Network (NAN) at the Sheraton New York Hotel.

The Award honors those who have continued to make real the principles for which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his life. In April 1968, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, and so, every April, in memory of his spirit and incredible achievements, the National Action Network pays respect and admiration to those that have kept the dream alive.

James Brown's incredible career spans five decades, and over the years he has endured first-hand experience of racial and social discrimination. Through his music he found solace, and at the same time was, and still is, able to inspire countless others across the world.

"It is nice to be thought of for such an honorable award that means so much to so many people. Dr. King was a man who fought for our country, for better, harmonious relationships and for hope for a better world for everybody. I, along with many others have the utmost respect for such an inspirational life-leader. We can all relate to his beliefs and we continue to follow that dream." - James Brown.

The Keepers of the Dream Awards are given by members of the civil rights community who have dedicated their lives to fairness and racial harmony. Other special honorees this year who are to receive an award include; Mellody Hobson, President of Ariel Capital Management, and financial contributor on ABC's 'Good Morning America', Tyler Perry, producer and actor, and more.
