Black Music - Wrong Message

Make a Joyful Noise Unto The Lord All Ye Lands

June has been designated Black Music Month which is a grand recognition considering all the great music that Black people have extolled upon this nation. The history of Black music has been inspirational as well as confrontational. It has been romantic and thought provoking. Our esteemed historical roots of music range from the blues, to jazz, to gospel, to opera, to rhythm and blues, to hip hop, to rock and funk. Black people have initiated and contributed to every aspect of melodic tone with our own God given creativity and talent.

The problem has become the imbalance in black music. Black music has become monotonous over diverse. Lewd over loving; materialistic over spiritualistic and submissive over rebellious. The videos have made the music even more visually distasteful.

We have been totally immersed with immoral and discouraging lyrics. Where is the love in the music (Boys to Men – To The End of The Road). Where is the political message in the music (Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On, Public Enemy - Fight The Power). Where is the soul (James Brown- You Know I Got Soul).

Gospel music has also become one dimensional, limited in its message and unprophetic in its pronouncement. Every song is about praise and heaven as if God is not speaking to the political and social issues of today – GodTalkNow. How many gospel songs confront the issues of today with spirit and truth. The spirituals were not only inspirational they were also confrontational. “Go Down, Moses”, “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel”. When was the last time you heard a gospel song confront the government.

Psalm 66:1-2 says that we should “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord all the lands. Sing the honor of his name: make his praise glorious.” Black music has to give God a sound that He can be proud of. The absence of spirit, truth, love and soul has made Black Music sorrowful rather than joyful.
