Armed Kids Suspected in Pa. Holdups

PITTSBURGH - Armed children, including one who may be as young as 8, have pulled off a string of holdups in the past week, police said.

Police Cmdr. Edward Kelly said in a confrontation Thursday, an art student thought a boy who appeared to be 8 years old was kidding until the youngster struck the student in the head and ran off with his book bag.

"It's pretty alarming to have someone at that age with a gun threatening people," Kelly said Tuesday.

Three youths, two 13 and one 15, have been charged with robbery, and authorities are warning students at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute to be careful.

Two more incidents occurred early Saturday.

"I was shocked at their ages," said Dan Poli, a 19-year-old culinary student who told police he was hit in the head several times after he refused to hand over money to about five youths. "I was wondering why they were out so late." The three youths were arrested shortly afterward.

Less than an hour earlier, art student Michael Fleet, 19, and a roommate said they were robbed at gunpoint by six boys. Fleet said he gave them $6, and the armed youth told him to run.

"But the (other) kids told him 'Shoot him,'" Fleet said. "It's a scary experience. You never really know what to do when a child has a gun."
