Eaton Canyon National Area Park

Set in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, this 184-acre wildlife sanctuary can be explored along three miles of hiking trails. The nature center and other buildings were destroyed in the 1993 fires and are under construction. Family nature walks are offered Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. Bird walks take place the third Sunday of the month. There are four picnic areas with tables and barbecue pits. The park is open from dawn to dusk. Eaton Canyon is located in the Pasadena foothills

Angeles National Forest

This 695.000-acre national forest is a dream come true for outdoor enthusiasts. Its 556 miles of hiking and equestrian trails traverse rugged canyons, arid slopes of yucca and brush, and the pine-forested San Gabriel Mountains. There are eight lakes and 189 miles of fishing streams. Campfire programs and guided walks are offered during summer.

In Altadena, the Henninger Flats Museum, a three-mile hike from Pinecrest Drive, offers exhibits of the areas flora, geology and history. Nine winter recreation areas draw downhill and cross-country skiers. Three off-road vehicle areas provide 360 miles of roads and trail. Sixty-four campgrounds offer a total of 1,173 campsites, many are open year-round.
