The Peace Dollar was the first coin in U.S. history to commemorate peace after World War I. The coin was the brainchild of Farran Zerbe, historian of the American Numismatic Association, and he presented his idea at the 1920 ANA Convention. Once the concept was approved, the Federal Commission of Fine Arts held a contest among the nation’s eight most prominent sculptors to submit models for the new coin.

The winning design depicts the artist’s wife as Miss Liberty with a crown similar to that found on the Statue of Liberty. The reverse has an eagle perched on a mountaintop with its wings folded in peaceful repose. This is a very popular series, as collectors can assemble a complete set of very pleasing coins for a modest investment.
