Police Investigate Possible
Murder-Suicide By Mother

Sacramento, Calif. - A woman who vanished with her two young children may have killed them and herself by driving into the murky Sacramento River, police said.

Witnesses said a car with a female driver and possibly two small children inside veered off a road and into the water near the town of Hood on Sunday evening.

One witness said "there was a little boy who seemed terrified in the right front seat,'' California Highway Patrol Officer Kelly Baraga said. Witnesses saw no brake lights, and there were no skid marks on the road, she said.

Divers found the car in the river, although investigators did not immediately say whether it belonged to the missing 31-year-old woman or whether there were bodies inside.

Police did not release the names of the missing people.

Baraga said a man went to the scene Monday to tell investigators that the driver may have been his wife, who he said was distraught. Relatives of the man told police that his wife had been in a deep depression and threatened to kill herself and her children, a boy and a girl.
