This magnificent piece of folk art took 33 years to complete. Sam Rodia built his towers from salvaged steel rods, dismantled pipes, bed frames and cement, and covered them with bottle fragments, ceramic tiles, china plates and more than 70,000 seashells. Afrer Rodia left Los Angeles in 1954, a group of artist maintained the structures.

In 1975, the preservation efforts were transferred to the city and the towers became a designated landmark. The Watts Towers Arts Center hosts exhibitions, art classes and special ethnic music, dance and poetry readings. Open weekends, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
