Woman, Unable To Find
Help After Being Stabbed

Miami - A stabbed and bleeding woman staggered from door to door, pleading for help, but nobody responded to her screams and she collapsed dead in a driveway.

"You can only imagine the fear and anxiety that she experienced, knowing that she was bleeding and dying and the frustration that she must have felt in trying to find someone to help her,'' police spokesman Lt. Bill Schwartz said.

Portia Lee, a 30-year-old mother of six, twice climbed a fence as she sought help Monday night in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood. A man who saw her running down a street finally called 911, police said.

"It's possible people heard her and didn't want to help. Maybe they were scared or didn't want to get involved,'' said homicide Detective Confesor Gonzalez. "With the technology they have these days, it's always a possibility that she would have lived. Maybe not. Still, it's a little sad that no one helped her.''

It was unclear who stabbed Ms. Lee and why. No immediate arrests wre made.

Witnesses told police that a woman resembling Ms. Lee was involved in a violent confrontation 15 to 30 minutes before she was seen running down the street. A man was seen chasing her.

Caroline Thomas, who lives in the neighborhood, said she didn't hear Ms. Lee's cries.

"I feel sorry, I feel sad,'' she said. "I don't think people heard her and ignored it, not around here.''
